Waiting in the light of the gospel

Ben Green | 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 

But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober.

When Jesus returns it will be sudden and unexpected, but we can still be ready. Ben explains how, in this in-between time, we can live in the light even while we are surrounded by darkness.

Grieving according to the gospel

John Lanchbury | 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 

Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.

We can have real hope, says John, because our belief is based on the historical facts of Jesus' death and resurrection. Yet we still grieve at the loss of someone close to us, and John explores how we can support each other through such difficult times.

Walking by the gospel

Ben Green | 1 Thessalonians 4:1-12 

Brothers and sisters, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more... It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honourable, not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God; and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister.

Paul has many good things to say about the church at Thessalonica and wants to encourage them to keep becoming more like Jesus. As Ben explains, there have always been areas of life where Christianity will clash with the prevailing culture of the day.

Continuing in the gospel

Susan Haynes | 1 Thessalonians 3:1-13 

Timothy has just now come to us from you and has brought good news about your faith and love... Therefore, brothers and sisters, in all our distress and persecution we were encouraged about you because of your faith. For now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord. How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our God because of you? Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith.

Surely every church should want to be growing in faith and love, but what does that look like today? Susan involves the congregation in answering that question and encourages us to continue on that journey.

Is there hope for the planet?

Dan Parnell | Leviticus 23:39-43 

‘So beginning with the fifteenth day of the seventh month, after you have gathered the crops of the land, celebrate the festival to the Lord for seven days; the first day is a day of sabbath rest, and the eighth day also is a day of sabbath rest... Live in temporary shelters for seven days: all native-born Israelites are to live in such shelters so that your descendants will know that I made the Israelites live in temporary shelters when I brought them out of Egypt.’

The short piece of drama which begins the recording also opened the first of our new-style, monthly Explore services. In a short talk Dan Parnell explains why we celebrate God's goodness at harvest time, and also how we can fulfil our call to restore our damaged world.

Suffering for the gospel

Ben Green | 1 Thessalonians 2:13-20 

For you, brothers and sisters, became imitators of God’s churches in Judea, which are in Christ Jesus: you suffered from your own people the same things those churches suffered from the Jews who killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets and also drove us out.

As Ben reminds us, the relative lack of persecution in modern Western countries is an exception to the experience of the church throughout the ages. If we truly stand for Christ we will face opposition, just as he did, yet nothing can take away the peace with God that he offers.

Sharing the gospel

Peter Frere | 1 Thessalonians 2:1-12 

For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives, nor are we trying to trick you. On the contrary, we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel... Just as a nursing mother cares for her children, so we cared for you. Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well.

Paul defends himself against accusations that his preaching in Thessalonica had been for selfish motives or that he had exploited his hearers in some way. Peter explains some of the lessons for the way we ourselves share the gospel, through what we say and how we live our lives.

Responding to the gospel

Bobbie Frere | 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10 

We know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake. You became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you welcomed the message in the midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia.

The message of the gospel should change lives, and in the case of the church at Thessalonica, it had - so much so that everyone could see it. That should be our aim too, says Bobbie: not just to believe in what Jesus has done for us but to live it out and pass it on.

Fix your eyes on Jesus

Ben Green | Hebrews 12:1-3 

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy that was set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

Ben was speaking with the recent death of Queen Elizabeth II very much on our minds, and indeed the whole service was a response to her life and her commitment to follow the true King, Jesus. It is good to have the example and encouragement of others, says Ben, but above all we look to Jesus as the one who has gone before us and defeated death.

In Thessalonica

Ben Green | Acts 17:1-15 

When Paul and his companions had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue. As was his custom, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, explaining and proving that the Messiah had to suffer and rise from the dead. ‘This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Messiah,’ he said. Some of the Jews were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a large number of God-fearing Greeks and quite a few prominent women.

It all starts off so well, as some of Paul's hearers believe his message. Yet, within days, there is a riot and Paul has to leave the city, as happened in many other places too. As Ben explains, the gospel remains divisive and offensive - yet it is the only way to find true life.

This is the first in a new series Walking Worthily in which we will look at how the gospel shapes the Christian life, as explained in Paul's letters to the Thessalonians.
